Lean Production

Since 2001 I am following and communicating the Lean Thinking key principles of James Womack and Dan Jones, founders of the Lean Enterprise Institute. It was a challenging task to apply the Value Stream Mapping methods to the aspects and characteristics of the Concrete Precast Industry. First client in 2001 was „Mischek Bau“ in Vienna. The method was applied to the production of solid walls and floor slabs with lattice girders.

What is Lean?

Womack and Jones tell us, that the core idea is to maximize customer value while minimizing waste. Simply, lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources.
A lean organization understands customer value and focuses its key processes to continuously increase it. The ultimate goal is to provide perfect value to the customer through a perfect value creation process that has zero waste.
To accomplish this, lean thinking changes the focus of management from optimizing separate technologies, assets, and vertical departments to optimizing the flow of products and services through entire value streams that flow horizontally across technologies, assets, and departments to customers.

 

What is a GEMBA WALK ?

Gemba walks denote the action of going to see the actual process, understand the work, ask questions, and learn. It is known as one fundamental part of Lean management philosophy. The Gemba Walk is an opportunity for staff to stand back from their day-to-day tasks to walk the floor of their workplace to identify wasteful activities. Gemba Walk is designed to allow leaders to identify existing safety hazards, observe machinery and equipment conditions, ask about the practiced standards, gain knowledge about the work status and build relationships with employees. It is different from classic management style of MBWA (Management By Walking Around). The objective of Gemba Walk is to understand the value stream and its problems rather than review results or make superficial comments. The gemba walk, is an activity that takes management to the front lines to look for waste and opportunities to practice gemba kaizen, or practical shopfloor improvement.
